In « Natural History », Barney discovers that a man named Jerome Whittaker, whom Barney mistook for his uncle, has signed a form claiming to be Barney`s father. Barney finally meets Jerome (John Lithgow) again in the episode « Legendaddy » and learns that he is actually his father. At his meeting, Jerome feels compelled to act like the womanizer he once was to impress Barney, and also because Barney refuses to see him otherwise. Barney eventually collapses and accuses Jerome of attacking him. Jerome, unable to apologize, apologizes and begs Barney to allow him to be a part of his life. Later in season six, in « Hopeless », Jerome tries to impress Barney by acting like his old self, but later reveals that he just pretended to pretend. However, Barney gladly listens to Jerome`s advice to settle down. Barney also learns of his Canadian ancestry when he learns that Jerome`s mother was born in Manitoba. To issue a legal exoneration? His bosses didn`t want to be seen dealing with shady Korean businessmen.

Essentially, Barney was a corporate patsy. His only real duty was to sign every contract and take responsibility for any criminal activity in which Alltru was involved, a role that could easily have landed him in jail. But episode 15 of season 9 revealed that Barney was actually playing the company. Barney`s boss was Greg Fisher, the guy who stole his girlfriend years ago and inspired his transformation from hippie to gambler, as stated in flashbacks to Season 1, Episode 15. He headed the GNB Research Committee in 2008 to design the GNB`s new headquarters (episodes 4×08: Woooo!, 4×18: Old King Clancy, 6×03 Unfinished) He worked long-term as an FBI informant and briefed the federal government on all the corruption that took place under the GNB`s umbrella. Two months after Greg`s wedding, Barney revealed everything that led to the man`s arrest for fraud and other crimes. Barney is very well connected and the richest member of the group. He often buys expensive items — like a last-minute plane ticket to San Francisco, thousands of dollars in stamps, or two TVs specifically designed to break the frustrated — spontaneously. He is also a bit metrosexual; He cultivates his chest, loves manicures and has extensive knowledge of designer brands and gastronomy. However, he also has a gambling problem that he occasionally tackles, only to suffer a relapse, as seen in several episodes such as « Atlantic City », where he has gambling friends in the Chinese triad, and « Monday Night Football ». Barney vowed revenge on the man who had once stolen his girlfriend. He worked long-term as an FBI informant and briefed the federal government on all the corruption that took place under the umbrella of the GNB.

Two months after Greg`s wedding, Barney revealed everything that led to the man`s arrest for fraud and other crimes. Barney eventually remained with the company at his P.L.E.A.S.E. post, while his ties to the Federals remained hidden. According to Future Ted in How I Met Your Mother, Barney continued to make «  » with money. In 2010, Barney appeared in a Super Bowl commercial that featured him in the Super Bowl grandstand with a sign reading « Hey Ladies Call Barney Stinson 1-877-987-6401. » A recorded message from Neil Patrick Harris was played when the number was dialed. According to The Early Show, Barney is one of the main reasons for the success of the series.[19] [7] Maclean`s stated that Barney is the most popular character on the show, explaining that the most sympathetic characters are often those with the best slogans. In 2006, TV Land named Barney`s « Suit Up » one of the top 100 slogans. Barney`s signature phrase is one of only four in contemporary television shows, as writers are now less likely to have a character repeat a phrase in many episodes. In June 2010, Entertainment Weekly named him one of the 100 greatest characters of the last 20 years.[8] [21] Paste included him in his list of the 20 best characters of 2011 and ranked him at number 4.

[22] It is suggested that his work may involve illegal activities (episode 3×14: The Bracket) But Barney worked all the time for the Department of Justice to set up and destroy Greg. Barney`s revenge trick finally succeeded, and Greg went to jail for every contract Barney signed. Barney then usurped Greg`s position in the company and became a senior member of Alltru and GNB. He accepted the position of P.L.E.A.S.E. to allow him to cement his future while destroying his oldest enemy, which is the Barney thing of all time. The task legally involved Barney in all incidents and plans of the company. Before the gang met Barney, he worked in a coffee shop and had a serious relationship with a woman named Shannon. His girlfriend eventually left him for Greg, a businessman. This prompted Barney to change his lifestyle and he became a « suit ». In the season 9 episode « Unpause », it was revealed that Greg was feeling bad about the situation, so he gave Barney a job at AltruCell (before he became GNB) and the post was titled Provide Legal Exoneration and Sign It All. Yes, the acronym for the job was P.L.E.A.S.E., which explained Barney`s remark whenever his friends asked him about his career. The job also made him the scapegoat for all illegal activities at the GNB, but Barney got the better of Greg all the time.

However, Barney`s most famous slogan is « legendary! » which he uses to describe anything fun and exciting (in fact, Ted says he abuses it). When he says something is legendary, he usually says, « It will be the pose. Hold on. Dary! Legendary! He also often says « wait for him » and uses the word « nice » to express when he likes something or someone. There were a number of clues that alluded to Barney`s career in How I Met Your Mother. He was clearly a high-ranking member of the company he worked for because of his prominent position. Barney was employed by AltruCell Corporation before merging with Goliath National Bank (GNB). He even helped Marshall get a job as a lawyer with the company and led the search committee when he hired Ted to design the new headquarters. The GNB was known to be very corrupt, and there was ample evidence that Barney had been involved in many of the illegal activities. At the end of the series, it was revealed that Barney was aware of the company`s corrupt dealings, but he acted as an informant to bring down his boss. AND he worked for the FBI, so he probably wanted to do it to provide evidence.

He said he knows so much about the company`s dirty secrets that he will never be fired (episode 4×20: Mosbius Designs), although he was nearly fired in early 2010 for being blamed for the failure of a major merger. (Episode 5×14: Perfect Week) In the pilot of the series, Barney utters for the first time the phrase « Costume up! » when he asks others to dress like him to go out. The phrase « Costume up! » comes from an advertisement for a costume sale in a later episode about his past with Shannon. According to designer Thomas, this is a sign that Barney « viewed his costume as a kind of superhero outfit that separated him from the pack. » [8] The phrase is repeated in many episodes and often altered to match the clothes Barney wears, such as « Flight Suit », « Snow Suit » and even « Birthday Suit ». He also uses the word « big » to describe anything he finds enjoyable, even from afar, inventing different types of « high-fives » for any occasion. Barney`s fictional high-five include « The Self-Five » (in which Barney himself plays a high-five), « The Prayer-Five » (in which Barney and Robin quietly move their hands in a movement that mimics the sign of the cross — up, down, left, right — before coming into contact with the backs of the hands while sitting in a pastor`s office), and « The Allmighty-Five » (in which Barney supposedly receives a high-five from God Himself). [20] Barney Stinson is one of the five main characters in How I Met Your Mother. He is a manipulative and hypersexual businessman in his thirties who always wears a suit, likes women with « daddy problems » and is often willing to express his (sometimes hypocritical) opinion. In previous seasons, Barney is a great womanizer and has been described by his best friend Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) as a « highly functional sociopath ».[5] Barney has a plethora of strategies and rules for hitting, sleeping with, and throwing women away. In several seasons of the series, four of the main characters are couples, as Ted dates Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) and Ted`s roommate, Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), gets engaged and later marries Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan). This leaves Barney the only single character, and according to Harris, Barney is « upset » that the other characters have teamed up. Later, in season 5, he dates Robin.

They separate soon after when they both realize that they are making themselves unhappy. (But Barney was aware of this and it was part of his long-term plan to take revenge on the head of the company who was the reason his first girlfriend Shannon had left him.) Ted, Marshall and Lily had been friends since their early days of college. They even moved to New York City together and found a favorite bar called MacLaren`s at the foot of the building where Ted and Marshall lived. And it was in a urinal at MacLaren`s house that Ted first met Barney. He mysteriously decided to improve Ted`s life, even though Ted didn`t ask Barney for help or want her in any way. In 2008, the book The Bro Code was published, purportedly written by Barney. Three other books purportedly written by Barney, Bro on the Go (2009), The Playbook (2010) and Bro Code for Parents: What to Expect When You`re Awesome (2012), have also been published. Throughout the series, Barney often refuses to say what he does for a living, brushing aside any questions about his work with a dismissive « please. » The secret behind Barney`s work was a long-standing joke during all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother.
